You heard it right. Choose C# over VB.NET. Why? Because C# programmers get paid more than VB.NET. That's reason #1.
OK, wait. Let's take a step back.
I've been consulting for many years now and I work on both C# and VB.NET depending on the client's requirements. I've seen more clients are migrating from Java to C# or VB.NET C#, not counting C++ to C# but I still see many sticking with VB to VB.NET route.
Both languages support almost every thing. There is not much difference besides syntaxes and minor performance differences.
If you are a manager and want to know which language you should choose, here is the answer.
- If you are migrating from C++ or Java, C# is the choice. Don't even think about VB.NET.
- If you are migrating from VB, then you may have to think if you want to put your team into a learning curve of a new language? In that case, you may want to stick with VB.NET. However, your team has think more object-oriented. VB.NET isn't VB anymore.
If you are a programmer, you may want to think sharp, C#. Here is why -
- Averate salary/rate for a C# programmer is more than a VB.NET programmer. Click Survey link.
- C# sounds like more object-oriented (sharp) than VB.NET even though both are pretty close.
- C# compiler is faster (even though very little)
- Our site is C# Corner ;). Ok, this one is not a reason.
What you think?

I agree VB.NET developers may be more than C#. VB has been a big thing for Microsoft since VB 3 and MS always had more VB developer than C++, or J++. My readings and stats are based on United States only. Here is a survey about Salaries: http://www.ftponline.com/vsm/2003_06/magazine/features/salarysurvey/ In this article, you will find: "Developers who program primarily in C# earn 26 percent more than those who develop primarily in Visual Basic .NET. " You may find VB.NET more productive because you are from VB background? I find C# more productive because I am from C++ background ..

I'll cut to the chase here. I strongly disagree. I have nothing against C# but VB is still the language of choice. Here is what I think; 1. If you are migrating from VB, then migrate to VB.Net. You're still gonna have to learn a lot, but the syntax is still 70% the same. Unlike C# where the syntax is 90% different. 2. The VB developer environment is at least twice as productive as that of C#. A bit more verbose, but still more productive. 3. Compiled VB code is smaller than that of C# (even though by a very small margin). 4. Where I live, VB developers average salary is MUCH higher than that of the C# counterpart. 5. Both VB and C# can do 99% of what the other can do. 6. In Orcas (the new Visual Studio from Microsoft, set to be released later this year) VB.Net supports a wider range of Lambda expressions. 7. Your sister site is VB .Net Heaven :-) Enjoy!
