In simple, you can access server data without submitting the whole page using Ajax and so you will not see page getting postback.

Here you will send request OR post something to Server without submitting the whole page, means without refreshing the complete page,,,Thats why its called Asynchronous and Language used here is JavaSCript and Data Transmission format will be XML.
In asp.net we have some controls like UpdatePanel which supports Ajax.
