Format exception was unhandled by user code ; why getting th

Question

Why am I getting "Format exception was unhandled by user code" : for the below statement :
int _testMemberId = Convert.ToInt32("xyz");
please can anyone help me quickly to find my mistake.

Well, "xyz" can't be parsed to an integer as it doesn't contain any digits - hence the format exception.
If you're not sure whether some string ('s' say) can be parsed to an integer or not, then you can use the int.TryParse method:
int _testMemberId;   int.TryParse(s, out _testMemberId);
This code would set _testMemberId to the result if 's' can be parsed to an integer or to zero if it can't.
If you want to issue can error message, you can do instead:
int _testMemberId;   if(!int.TryParse(s, out _testMemberId))   {       MessageBox.Show("String can't be parsed to an integer");   }
