Think of being an architect is like a "Movie Director". Before you direct jump to the director role, you must work with experienced directors as an Assistant Director and learn things from them. So initially, try to be a team lead/tech lead and lead a group of developers to smaller products/modules. Then work with an Architect to learn how things are being done. And try to help him out.
Read and read and "do it yourself" on your personal small projects. However, to become an Architect of a real large project, you must have experience. It's like architecting a 25-story building. You can't just become an architect by reading. You must have build before that with some senior guys and learn the process.
Make sense?
