As some of you were stressing on PMP, I feel that I over-embossed PMP as the ultimate project manager skills.. so I wanted to say some bad truths too:
1) In capgemini, i worked under one PMP certfied project manager. He was certified but was amateur in tech & people. After project completion, front end developed was not compatible with back end :), people were working 12 to 14 hours per day & weekends too. After 6 months, 4 out of 6 members changed company. The core reasons we identified was improper aligning of talents, pressured & hectic work enviroment, too much peak without breaks..
SO just being PMP won't ensure success of project & career.
2) In another MNC, i had my friend as PMP certified manager. He was just laying off things in a pre-defined manner, NO dynamic approach to the problems plus Blaming team members..
Whenever things are working fine, people will praise each other & it attracts more good things! In the reverse, whenever things were bad, people will blame each other & it attracts more failures..
SO to conclude, PMP is a course & certification which can give a pre-defined paths & solutions for certain general project problems. It is really a GOOD TO HAVE & Showcasable in resume, it is measurable, it fetches career value. But it is not the ultimate!
The Best Project Manager requires dynamic skills, thoughts & positive personal traits above PMP! He positively motivates the team & achieve results. People will love to work under his project. Additional to work he/she take care of learning & training for improved efficiency & reduced working hours & chaos.. Anybody can be BEST PM, through learning, focused approach & further having a good heart!
I would like to take Mahesh Chand's words.. "Coding is an Art", like "Management is an Art" :) Be a good PM, industry requires lot!

"Today's companies wants Leaders instead of degree managers"
i observe that many managers have no technical knowledge ,then what is the meaning of his degree and management..
I believe that instead of any degree,we need to built leader skill in your own, according to me managers need technical, management as well as leader skill to make organization successful,
if you wants to become a something i.e an architect or managers dont think about scope ,just do your work then after that automatically your hidden talent and leadership create you a scope in your particular career path.
and more important thing to achieve these thing are ,your approach to learn will be as
"be winner but look like a beginner"

Developer can grow up into following:
- Architect
- Project Manager
Both above roles can grow more into:- CEO
- CTO
As Mahesh said, small companies have project managers who are loyal employees, they might not be knowing the professional ways of handling projects & teams. As he pointed, Architect is another good track to grow up. Please note that the architect:developer ratio falls from 1:10 to 1:30 in India.
Scope of Architect is more compared to Project Manager. (please search in naukri.com with "architect .net", it is a primitive analysis though)
In the learning curve of Architect i would suggest Design Patterns, Architectural Patterns, SOA, Framework design, feasibility study, POC, Reusable Component strategies etc.
In the advanced side there are certifications like MCA (Microsoft Certified Architect) in specific technology areas, we need to do test in Microsoft Redmond location, costing around 20000 USD.
To be honest, in USA i can see 20 year experienced who call themselves Developers. In India, we were not too confident to say as Developers. So i doubt a little whether your existing organization have a programming career like Architect in tact. If you really love your programming job, you might need to stress on growth as Architect or reach places!

I support Anurag Sarkar's answer although the link was for a slightly different scenario.
To be specific to your question, I say the essential Project Manager skills in SE as:
- Good amount of Software Development experience (A good engineer becomes good manager, I hope you have the same)
- PMP Certification or Knowledge (project analysis, cost estimation, plan workout, scheduling etc.)
- Good Team Building & Management skills (this will be more to personal traits, but developable skills)
MBA is more into business administration & fall into a more higher category comparing with PMP.Anurag SarkarPosted May 26, 2013, 5:20 PM
