I need to validate a user name string when a user choose a new user name . it should be without preceding and successive spaces. any ida?

You can use regular expressions by using namespace : using System.Text.RegularExpressions; Here is a URL to teach you some regular expressions, but you can always find a tutorial on regex by searching PERL links. http://windows.oreilly.com/news/csharp_0101.html You'll have to learn them yourself in order to make them just right, I'm afraid. Don't worry. They're easy to use for easy matches. A few of our less outgoing programmers have downloaded a program called AgentRansack .
