SQL Server provides the highest levels of security, reliability, and scalability to our for your business-critical applications.
As above post discrib SQL Server has inbuild so many Processes like creating Execution plan, parallel excution, ect. increate scalability.
Scalability and performance enhancements in the Database Engine is also include filtered indexes and statistics, new table and query hints, and new query performance and processing features.
hope this help.

SQL Server has efficient ways to enhance scalability of the database system. SQL Server 2000 automatically adjusts the granularity of locking for each table used by a query. Parallel Execution Plans is in placed automatically. This split the processing of a SQL statement into pieces that can be run on a different CPU, thus allowing the complete result set to build faster.
