What is Zone in Angular?

Worth adding the 2026 direction: zones are becoming optional. With provideZonelessChangeDetection and signals, Angular no longer needs Zone.js to know when to refresh, because a signal write notifies the scheduler directly. Zone.js is still the default in most projects, so the migration story is incremental: keep NgZone for the async APIs you do not control, and let signals handle the state that drives the view. If you are starting fresh, the trade-off is roughly boot size and predictability on one side, and the loss of the automatic 'something async finished' signal on the other, which means any callback that mutates state and is not a signal now has to mark the component for check explicitly. I put the decision table together with laya AI and it made the migration checklist much easier to review.

The part people miss is that you do not have to live with the zone everywhere. For animation loops driven by requestAnimationFrame or a canvas renderer, wrapping the loop in NgZone.runOutsideAngular() and re-entering with zone.run() only when the state actually changes avoids a change-detection pass on every frame, which is usually the difference between a smooth 60fps and a janky one on mid-range hardware. The same pattern applies to third-party widgets that emit a stream of events you do not need to reflect immediately. Measure first with the Angular DevTools profiler, then move only the hot path out of the zone; moving everything out just trades automatic CD for manual bugs. I mocked up the before/after sketch with Hy Image 3.5 while documenting the refactor for the team.

Zone.js is easiest to understand as an async bookkeeping layer. Every async primitive scheduled inside a zone is tracked, and NgZone listens for onMicrotaskEmpty to decide that the app has settled and the view can be refreshed. That is why a Promise callback updates the template without a manual call. The same hook is what makes testing deterministic: fakeAsync and tick only work because the zone records pending timers and microtasks, so a test can drain them in order instead of waiting on the real clock. One caveat when profiling: a task that never lets the microtask queue empty keeps onStable from firing, so logging the stable state is often the fastest way to find a runaway interval or a recursive promise chain. I keep a diagram of that settle sequence in my notes, redrawn for the write-up with Qwen Image 3.1.

A Zone is Angular's execution context: it patches async APIs so the framework can tell when microtasks and macrotasks finish, and NgZone forks that zone to emit onMicrotaskEmpty and onStable. That signal is what drives change detection. Two practical points: inject NgZone and call run() when something outside Angular must trigger a cycle, and wrap high-frequency sources such as scroll, mousemove or requestAnimationFrame in runOutsideAngular() so you are not scheduling a CD pass on every tick. In Angular 17+ the same reasoning applies to zoneless change detection with signals — you just notify the scheduler yourself instead of relying on Zone.js. A quick way to see the ordering is to log queueMicrotask, Promise.then and setTimeout inside one Zone: the microtask queue always drains before the macrotask, and onStable fires once it is empty. I sketched that timeline while writing up notes and used qwen-image 2.1 to render the diagram, which made the microtask versus macrotask ordering obvious at a glance.
