Briefly,
An array is a strongly typed collection of values of a particular type whose length cannot be changed once it has been created.
An ArrayList is a weakly typed collection of values of any type (everything's stored internally as 'object') whose length is expanded at runtime as new values are added.
A List is a strongly typed collection of values of type T whose length is expanded at runtime as new values are added.
For value types, a List is more efficient than an ArrayList because the value types don't have to be boxed on the heap (they are stored as their actual type in a List) and no casting is required.
