OpenAI launches Grid Protectors program for flexible compute-campus power use

OpenAI has launched the Grid Protectors Program, a national effort to work with utilities, regulators and policymakers on reliable, affordable electricity. The program is intended for future compute campuses and will arrange for them to reduce demand when local grids are under strain. Depending on local needs and equipment, campuses may also use on-site generation, storage, batteries and power controls to support grid operations. OpenAI says its planned Effingham County, Georgia, campus will serve as a pilot, with an agreement that includes up to 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response. The company says it will share additional commitments as arrangements are finalized.

Why it matters

Large compute campuses can increase demand for electricity and grid infrastructure. Flexible power use and commitments to pay related costs could help utilities manage peaks while limiting costs passed to families and small businesses.

Key points

  • The program will coordinate with utilities, regulators and policymakers.
  • The Effingham County, Georgia, campus is intended to be a pilot.
  • The Georgia Power agreement includes up to 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response.
  • OpenAI says flexibility could support air conditioning for about 700,000 households.
  • U.S. data center capacity is projected to exceed 100 gigawatts by 2030.
